We were lucky to catch up with Elissa Onda recently and have shared our conversation below.

Elissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s something crazy on unexpected that’s happened to you or your business

One of my craziest stories is a ‘fake it until you make it’ kind of story. Good Morning America called me and asked if we could do a full set design, for a segment featuring The Rock and Emily Blunt. I jumped at the opportunity, but I didn’t know if I could pull this off. I have never done set design before and I had to have it all ready within 2 weeks! The art director sent me the trailer of the movie they were promoting to use an inspiration and sent me on my way. Needless to say I got to work, I frantically sourced plants, rugs, decorative accessories, seating, end tables, trunks the list went on. I then went on site visits to meet with the producers, all the while shaking a little my boots but acting as if I had done this a million times. Somehow the stars aligned and my team and I were able to pull it all together and it went off with out a hitch. The big lesson is sometimes you just need to cross your fingers and… jump.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My business is a unique, event business called Sweet Dream Sleepovers. We specialize in Slumber Parties, Glamping, Tea Parties, Picnics and Movie Nights. What sets us aside from others is our knowledge of hospitality, our creative design ideas and our ability to make the process fun. I am very proud of the way the company and our team have grown since we opened. We started out doing small events, trying to convince people to give us a try; and now our books remain full and we have to turn away more clients than accept. It wasn’t always easy, it took a lot of discipline and dedication but because I love what I do, the journey has been incredible.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?

I always want to seek out the unique talents of my employees and foster an environment that builds on those attributes. This is something that will help our business remain agile during challenging times. Effective managers don’t just push for high performance, they value helping people discover their natural talents and seek out opportunities to utilize those strengths.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

Word of mouth. As long as you are reliable and consistently putting out beautiful work, your own clients will be your best advertisement and even better yet, it is free! I can easily tell you, nothing brings me more joy than to read an email that starts out with ” My friend recommended your company” or ” You did my nephews’ party and it looked amazing! We would like to book for our daughters sleepover party”.
